Francesco Fragomeni Remakes Hippolyte Bayard's Drowned Man

On May 5, 2024 artist Francesco Fragomeni re-enacted Hippolyte Bayard's creation of his most famous photograph The Drowned Man. Sitting completely still in the hot Southern California sun for one hour, before an enthusiastic audience, Fragomeni made three self-portraits using Bayard's direct positive process. Here is a time lapsed video of the event. Carolyn invited Fragomeni to create this performance so a twenty-first-century audience could experience the endurance and patience required to make a photograph in 1840.

Hippolyte Bayard's Direct Positive

In conjunction with the exhibition Hippolyte Bayard: A Persistent Pioneer, Carolyn produced a film featuring Barret Oliver making a direct positive using Bayard's unique direct positive process.
